چکیده

We develop a version of the vacancy mediated tracer diffusion model, which follows the properties of the physical system of In atoms diffusing within the top layer of Cu(0 0 1) terraces. This model differs from the classical tracer diffusion problem in that (i) the lattice is finite, (ii) the boundary is a trap for the vacancy, and (iii) the diffusion rate of the vacancy is different, in our case strongly enhanced, in the neighborhood of the tracer atom. A simple continuum solution is formulated for this problem, which together with the numerical solution of the discrete model compares well with our experimental results. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Indium on Cu(100) from first principles: Energetics, complex formation, and diffusion of adsorbates and vacancies on terraces and at steps

Indium In on the Cu 001 surface is a paradigmatic adsorption system exhibiting two important effects: first, In has been reported to foster the layer-by-layer growth of this surface; second, In diffuses anomalously and possibly in concert with surface vacancies, and has indeed been used as a tracer of vacancy surface diffusion. Detailed knowledge of the energetics and diffusion barriers of In o...

The Generalized Maxwell-Stefan Model Coupled with Vacancy Solution Theory of Adsorption for Diffusion in Zeolites

It seems using the Maxwell-Stefan (M-S) diffusion model in combination with the vacancy solution theory (VST) and the single-component adsorption data provides a superior, qualitative, and quantitative prediction of diffusion in zeolites. In the M-S formulation, thermodynamic factor (Г) is an essential parameter which must be estimated by an adsorption isotherm. Researchers usually utilize the ...

Vacancy diffusion in the Cu(001) surface I: An STM study

We have used the indium/copper surface alloy to study the dynamics of surface vacancies on the Cu(001) surface. Individual indium atoms that are embedded within the first layer of the crystal, are used as probes to detect the rapid diffusion of surface vacancies. STM measurements show that these indium atoms make multi-latticespacing jumps separated by long time intervals. Temperature dependent...

Nothing moves a surface: vacancy mediated surface diffusion.

We report scanning tunneling microscopy observations, which imply that all atoms in a Cu(001) surface move frequently, even at room temperature. Using a low density of embedded indium "tracer" atoms, we visualize the diffusive motion of surface atoms. Surprisingly, the indium atoms seem to make concerted, long jumps. Responsible for this motion is an ultralow density of surface vacancies, diffu...

1 Diffusion on and in Surfaces : the Atomic Slide Puzzle

This paper presents first results from scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, which show that a close-packed terrace of a metal surface can be far from static, even at temperatures as low as room temperature. We make the motion visible of the atoms in a Cu(001) terrace, by embedding a low density of In atoms in the first Cu layer. The peculiar characteristics of the motion of the In show t...
